Real Estate Moving Checklist
It’s finally happened. After looking at real estate tips and real estate guides, after learning about mortgage and real estate and budgeting for a real estate purchase you have finally found your dream home. Now the countdown to moving day begins and there is so much to do.
8 Weeks Before You Move
- Make a file to keep all of your paperwork in
- Decide if you want to hire a mover or do it yourself
- If you decide to use a mover start collecting estimates
7 Weeks Before You Move
- Make a list of all your medical records, including prescriptions and ask your doctor to refer you to a new doctor in your new area
- If you have children get there transcripts sent over to the new school district or day care facility
- Make copies of all legal documents and financial records
- Talk to your insurance agent to discuss how your policies will be affected with the move
6 Weeks Before You Move
- Make an inventory of all of your valuables and items that are hard to replace
- Take an inventory of all the items that you pack
- Decide what you will keep and what you will throw out, sell, or give away
5 Weeks Before You Move
- Collect boxes and packing materials and start packing things that you do not need right away. Remember to write down what is in each box or the room that it belongs in to make unpacking easier
- If you are using a moving company arrange a moving day with them
4 Weeks Before You Move
- Talk to your utility companies and schedule a disconnect date on your old home and a connection on your new home. Make sure you disconnect the day after you leave so that you are not left in the dark with no services on moving day.
- Make arrangement to transport your pets if need be
- Cancel any local subscriptions, such as newspaper delivery
3 Weeks Before You Move
- Determine what to do with any plants. Most moving companies will not put plants on their moving trucks.
- Get rid of any poisonous materials, explosives or corrosives
- Keep packing
2 Weeks Before You Move
- Talk to your bank and arrange to have all accounts closed or transferred to a new bank
- Notify all of your creditors of your move and provide a new address for them
- Prepare meals for the final week of your stay at your old home. Try to use up food that is in the refrigerator.
1 Weeks Before You Move
- Call your moving company to confirm the move date
- Provide friends and family with your new phone number and address
- Finish up packing
- Make an essentials box to put items that you need to have on hand
- Drain water hoses and water beds
- Empty out your refrigerator and freezer within 24 hours of moving
- Clean up the house
Moving Day
- Make sure you check every room before you leave to be certain that you got everything out
- Verify the destination with your moving company
- Check all appliances at your new home to make sure that they work properly
- Call the local Post and let them know that you are there
- Check all of your boxes as they are unloaded from the moving truck and make sure that you got everything
- Now you can start unpacking
Once you are settled in your new home you can call the local paper for delivery. You will also need to get a new drivers license with your new address and if you find out any local information concerning your pets and voting.
